WASHINGTON, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Wednesday of 153,000 horseshoe magnets because of a safety hazard.

The CPSC said the magnets -- manufactured in India and distributed in the United States by United Scientific Supplies Inc. of Waukegan, Ill. -- have red surface paint that contains high levels of lead, violating federal lead paint standards.

The recalled red-painted magnets, sold in five sizes, have product numbers SHM020 (two-inch magnets), SHM030 (three-inch), SHM040 (four-inch), SHM050 (five-inch), and SHM060 (six-inch).

The magnets were sold nationwide from March 1995 through September 2007 for about $1. Distributors also sold the products to schools for use in science classes.

Consumers with recall questions can contact United Scientific at 888-284-857.
