WASHINGTON, May 16 (UPI) -- A five-year struggle continues between Fall River, Mass., residents and Weaver's Cove Energy LLC over a proposed LNG facility. While the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved the project, the Coast Guard opposes it as an unacceptable safety risk. -

WASHINGTON, May 14 (UPI) -- Rising fuel and food costs are hitting Mongolia hard, with foreign investors exploiting the situation to pressure the country to open up its economy. Given the country's political isolation, sandwiched between China and Russia, its two major trading partners, Ulaanbaatar is being held over the proverbial barrel in negotiations with its giant neighbors, leaving its population of 2.9 million nervously awaiting further aftershocks from rising inflation. -

WASHINGTON, May 14 (UPI) -- Faced with growing pressure to decrease gas prices, U.S. senators voted to stop stockpiling oil in the national reserve yesterday, but they rejected a plan to increase domestic production.

India starts solar power generation

NEW DELHI, March 18 (UPI) -- India has unveiled a program to support megawatt-sized, grid-interactive solar power-generation projects up to a maximum capacity of 50 MW.
"Any registered company as project developer, would be eligible to set up solar power projects on build, own and operate basis," said Vilas Muttemwar, minister for new and renewable energy. "Proposal from each project developer with a maximum aggregate capacity of 5 MW, either through a single project or multiple projects of a minimum capacity of 1 MW each, would be considered."
He said a maximum of 10 MW capacity solar power generation projects would be considered in each state. Preference would be given to projects in states where the electricity regulatory commission has announced or is in the process of announcing tariffs for solar power.
Muttemwar said that for the projects approved and commissioned by Dec. 31, 2009, the ministry will provide generation-based incentives for solar photovoltaic power and for solar thermal power fed to the grid by the solar power project developers after taking into account the tariff provided by the SERC or the utility.
