Report: France Telecom seeks deregulation

PARIS, May 9 (UPI) -- France Telecom reportedly has asked the European Union to begin moving toward the complete deregulation of Europe's telecom sector by 2012.

The French newspaper Les Echos said Tuesday that the EU's current regulatory regime was discouraging the growth of infrastructure needed for broadband and wireless services.

The plan calls for an end to tariff regulation starting next year, with total deregulation by 2012.

France Telecom is a major player in broadband and wireless and sees too much growth in so-called virtual networks in which competitors piggyback on existing telco networks without contributing to the cost of infrastructure expansion.
