Fiberail courts Malay broadband providers

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, April 27 (UPI) -- Malaysian fiber-optic operator Fiberail is courting several last-mile broadband providers about possible joint ventures in the retail sector.

The goal would be to launch a comprehensive package of voice, video and data services aimed primarily at the energy industry.

Fiberail Chief Executive Officer N. Balasingham told the Business Times recently the company would consider carrying out its own last-mile functions if no partner was found.

"But we don't see that happening as we think we can sort something out with the last-mile providers," he said.

Last-mile providers connect broadband subscribers to an access network, such as the optical net Fiberail has been operating for the past 14 years.

Fiberail recently received a license provision allowing it to expand beyond its current operating area along railroad rights of way.

The Times said Thursday that Fiberail's proposed expansion fits in with the government's ambitious plans to increase broadband penetration into Malaysia's countryside.
