Summer camps see cases of swine flu

ATLANTA, June 19 (UPI) -- Summer camps in Georgia, California and North Carolina have reported probable cases of swine flu, federal health officials said.

While cases of swine flu are fading overall with the onset of warmer weather, the H1N1 virus is appearing in camps just as it did in schools, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

This week, religious camps in Clayton, Ga., and Santa Rosa, Calif., reported probable cases of swine flu, as did a Boy Scout camp near Asheville, N.C., The New York Times reported Friday.

Camps should be on alert for sick children, who then should be kept at home or until 24 hours after flu symptoms have vanished, said Dr. Daniel B. Jernigan, deputy director of the CDC's flu division. Parents should be ready to take their children home from camp on short notice, Jernigan added.

In the United States, 21,449 cases of H1N1 flu have been reported, resulting in 87 deaths, the CDC said.
