Set to be executive produced by Rod Roddenberry, the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, along with Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin and showrunner Bryan Fuller, Star Trek: Discovery will begin production in Toronto in September for a January 2017 premiere.

All episodes of the sci-fi series will be available exclusively on CBS All Access, the network's digital-subscription, video on-demand and live-streaming service in the United States and on Netflix internationally.

During the anniversary panel, Fuller said Discovery "won't be episodic" and that it will celebrate the franchises history of celebrating individuality and diversity. "The new series has to remind audiences the message of Star Trek -- continuing to push boundaries," Fuller said according to Deadline.

"We do have to celebrate a progression of our species because right now we need a little help."
