NEW YORK, April 18 (UPI) -- Scrubs veteran John C. McGinley has been cast as the lead in IFC's scripted comedy-horror series, Stan Against Evil.

McGinley, who is also a producer on the New England-set show, will play the disgruntled, former police sheriff Stanley Miller, while actress and comedian Janet Varney has signed on to play Evie Barret, his replacement, the cable network said in a news release.

"When the new, strong-willed sheriff Evie Barret opens his eyes to the plague of angry demons haunting their small New Hampshire town, Stan begrudgingly joins an alliance with her to fight them off," a synopsis said.

Written and produced by Dana Gould and executive produced by Tom Lassally, Frank Scherma and Justin Wilkes, the eight-episode series is to premiere this fall. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in June in Atlanta.

"Dana has crafted the most deliciously combustible, subversive contrarian on television. And we are going to set it off!" McGinley said in a statement.
