ATLANTA, April 3 (UPI) -- Season 6 of The Walking Dead ended Sunday night with the apparent death of a beloved character, but who exactly it was remains a mystery.

The arrival of arch-villain Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, didn't come until the final minutes of the nail-biter of an episode.

Negan is the leader of an enormous group of survivors that heroes Rick Grimes [played by Andrew Lincoln,] Daryl Dixon [played by Norman Reedus] and their friends ran afoul of numerous times throughout this past season.

In Sunday's episode, Negan captured and forced to kneel on the ground Glenn [played by Steven Yeun,] his pregnant wife Maggie [played by Lauren Cohan,] Rick's girlfriend Michonne [played by Danai Gurira,] Rick's son Carl [played by Chandler Riggs,] Abraham [played by Michael Cudlitz,] Abraham's girlfriend Sasha [played by Sonequa Martin-Green,] Abraham's ex-girlfriend Rosita [played by Christian Serratos], Aaron [played by Ross Marquand] and Eugene [played by Josh McDermitt.]

Negan then threatened to kill one of his prisoners with the barbed wire-covered bat he calls Lucille.

After playing a sick choosing game of eenie meenie, Negan lands on a person whose face the audience cannot see.

"Anybody moves, anybody says anything, cut the boy's other eye out and feed it to his father," Negan said, referring to Carl and Rick. "And then we'll start. You can breathe. You can blink. You can cry. Hell, you're all going to be doing that."

He is then seen clubbing someone repeatedly as blood streams down the camera lens.

"Taking it like a champ," Negan is heard saying as he continues to strike after the camera goes black and the credits roll.

The episode did offer a ray of hope when Lennie James' character Morgan finds and rescues the gravely injured Carol, who went off on her own because she no longer wants to kill to protect her loved ones. Melissa McBride plays Carol.

Season 7 of the AMC series is to begin in October.
