'Miss Marple' star Geraldine McEwan dead at 82

"Following a stroke at the end of October and a period in hospital, Geraldine McEwan passed away peacefully on Jan. 30," her son Greg and daughter Claudia said in a statement to The Telegraph newspaper.

LONDON, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- British actress Geraldine McEwan has died at the age of 82, her children confirmed Saturday.

The exact cause of her death was not disclosed.

"Following a stroke at the end of October and a period in hospital, Geraldine McEwan passed away peacefully on Jan. 30," her son Greg and daughter Claudia said in a statement to The Telegraph newspaper. "Her family would like to thank the staff at Charing Cross Hospital who cared for her incredibly well."

McEwan played the iconic sleuth Miss Marple in 12 television mysteries, which aired on ITV in the United Kingdom and on PBS in the United States.

The BAFTA Award-winning actress has appeared in the films The Dance of Death, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Henry V, Love's Labour's Lost, Vanity Fair and The Magdalene Sisters.
