LOS ANGELES, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Arrow is gearing up for a new, third season.

The CW series has cast Riddick actor Matt Nable to portray Ra's al Ghul. The character is the leader of the League of Assassins, and father to Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law). Liam Neeson portrayed the villain in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and offered to reprise the role, but executive producer Marc Guggenheim wanted to take the portrayal in a different direction.

"You don't want to compete with Batman Begins," he said at San Diego Comic-Con. "We wanted our Ra's to be very different -- at least our own Arrow-ified version."

Arrow follows Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), a billionaire playboy who becomes the hooded vigiliante Green Arrow. The series released a season three teaser Thursday that sees the character go on a high speed chase and heat things up with Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards).

Arrow returns to The CW on October 8.
