NEW YORK, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Jimmy Fallon is to return to his former stomping grounds next month as guest host of "Saturday Night Live" in New York, NBC said Friday.

The comedian is to appear on the Dec. 21 episode of the sketch comedy series when Justin Timberlake is booked as the evening's musical guest.

Fallon was an "SNL" writer and cast member from 1998 to 2004. He has served as host of "Late Night" since 2009 and will take over for Jay Leno as emcee of "The Tonight Show" in February.
