NEW YORK, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- "Today" co-host Kathie Lee Gifford said she was a wreck after dropping a squirming puppy on its head during the New York morning program.

People.com said Gifford apologized profusely to the dog as she picked it up and tried to calm it down on Thursday's segment about pet adoption, but she was still feeling terrible about the incident Friday.

"The puppy's OK, but I'm a wreck!" she said during an on-air phone call to her "Today" colleagues Friday. "It's very upsetting for me. I have three dogs of my own and I adore dogs."
