Second season of 'Spartacus' ordered

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. cable network Starz says it has ordered a second season of its epic gladiator series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand."

The announcement was made Friday by Chris Albrecht, president and chief executive officer of Starz Entertainment, at the network's Television Critics Association presentation in Los Angeles.

The show's fate was uncertain because its lead, Andy Whitfield, is battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma and left the series after one season to focus on his health.

The title role of "Spartacus" is being re-cast.

"Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," a six-part prequel to "Blood and Sand," is to premiere on Starz this month.
