LOS ANGELES, May 24 (UPI) -- The iconic supernatural/mystery series "Lost" ended its six-season run on U.S. television with a 2 1/2-hour finale Sunday night.

Hero Jack Shepherd died after vanquishing the evil Man in Black, and saving the island and powerful light of goodness it protected, while kind-hearted Hurley took over as the island's new guardian and wily Ben became his second-in-command.

Meanwhile, characters Kate, Sawyer, Richard, Claire, Miles and Frank were seen flying off the island in a patched-together plane. Their fates after they left the island were unknown.

The water-cooler show also featured appearances -- in what has become known as the flash-sideways world -- by beloved characters who died in earlier installments. The last episode saw Charlie and Claire, Kate and Jack, Sawyer and Juliet, Desmond and Penny, Sayid and Shannon, Hurley and Libby, and Sun and Jin all recognizing each other as their soul-mates, subsequently wrapping up a lot of hanging story lines.

In the finale's last moments, it was revealed everything on the island really did take place and the show's alternate reality or sideways world was a gathering spot where the once-close-knit castaways reconnected with each other after death to help Jack move on after his own demise.
