LOS ANGELES, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Drake has broken an American Music Awards record by scoring 13 nominations ahead of this year's show.

Drake leads all artists in categories ranging from Artist of the Year, Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Album, Favorite Rap Artist, Favorite Rap Song and Favorite R&B song among others.

The previous record of 11 nominations was held Michael Jackson back in 1984.

Behind the Canadian rapper among 2016 nominees is Rihanna with seven nominations followed by Adele and Justin Bieber with five. Notably, Beyonce and The Chainsmokers each earned four.

One of the big awards of the event, Artist of the Year, will be decided between Drake, Adele, Beyoncé, Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Twenty One Pilots, Underwood and The Weeknd. A win for Bieber will tie the pop star for most wins in that category behind Taylor Swift with three.

The fan-voted award show is set to take place live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Nov. 20.

Drake last made headlines in September when he released a new short film titled Please Forgive Me that ties into his latest best-selling album Views.
