LOS ANGELES, May 4 (UPI) -- The Weeknd is making new music, and he says the "magic" of the project is what forced him to quit the European leg of Rihanna's Anti world tour.

Speaking with Vogue magazine, the 26-year-old "Often" crooner, born Abel Tesfaye, explained he didn't want the tour -- or any other major appearance -- to interfere with his work.

"Creatively, some magic is happening right now, and I don't want to lose it," Tesfaye said. "It could be an album or it could be something else, but whatever it is, music is being made."

The indie R&B singer turned pop sensation dropped out of Rihanna's huge European leg of her world tour due to "unforeseen changes with upcoming projects," reps said in late March. A source said at the time Tesfaye "hit a new stride" on his upcoming album.

Rihanna's European tour kicks off in Amsterdam, Netherlands on June 11 and will still feature rapper Big Sean.
