U2 concert canceled after gunman enters arena

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Irish rock band U2 was forced to cancel a concert in Stockholm, Sweden Sunday after a gunman entered the Globe Arena.

According to unofficial reports described to The Telegraph, as fans started to take their seats, a gunman entered the arena claiming to be an off-duty police officer. The venue was shortly evacuated as security and police began searching for the suspect.

U2 released a statement on their website referring to the incident as "a security breach."

"As the breach has not been resolved quickly and as audience safety is paramount, the police have advised The Globen and Live Nation that they have no option but to postpone tonight's show, to a rescheduled date of Tuesday 22nd September... The organizers apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank the audience for their understanding. Their safety is the priority."

The band took to Twitter Sunday to address the situation and to apologize for the inconvenience.

"Our hearts go out to all fans, staff and the band- sad about the cancellation but really glad that everybody is safe!," the rockers posted.

U2's sold-out world arena U2ieTour continues on with six dates scheduled for London's O2 Arena in October and November. Back in May, lead guitarist The Edge fell off the stage while performing in Vancouver.
