NEW YORK, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- An actor playing Spider-Man was hurt when he fell into a pit at the end of Monday night's performance of the Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark."

The New York Times reported the mishap, citing police and witnesses as its sources for the story.

Equipment also fell into the audience when a line holding the actor apparently snapped, the newspaper said video taken of the performance showed.

The actor was taken to Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital Center, but no other information about the nature of his injuries or his condition was immediately available, the Times said Tuesday. Not even his identity has been confirmed to the press, although Bellevue said it treated a patient named Christopher Tierney Monday night and there is an aerialist by that name in the show.

Because of the intensity of the stunts, several actors play different aspects of the iconic webslinger each performance.

Witnesses said there was a blackout in the theater following Monday's incident, then the house lights came back on and an announcement was made saying the show would resume. Eventually, however, another announcement was made saying the show had ended for the evening.

Director Julie Taymor's $65 million musical features complicated aerial stunts, as well as a rock 'n' roll soundtrack by U2's Bono and The Edge. It recently began previews after being delayed several times due to technical snafus and financial problems. Several other actors reportedly have also been hurt in the mounting of the ambitious project.
