April 20 (UPI) -- Marvel has hired filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to direct their next superhero epic, Captain Marvel. According to Variety, the pair were chosen after the studio was impressed with their vision for the heroine.
Boden and Fleck are best known for directing 2015 Ryan Reynolds drama Mississippi Grind and for collaborating on Half Nelson starring Ryan Gosling. They also have experience in television, directing episodes of Showtime's The Affair and Billions.
Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, marks the first time a woman is headlining her own solo adventure inside the Marvel cinematic universe. This led to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige wanting to utilize a female director for the project.
"With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we've ever put in a movie," Feige said previously while speaking with Entertainment Weekly. "Her powers are off the charts, and when she's introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we've ever had."
Nicole Perlman who is handling the script added, "I think that making sure that Captain Marvel is not somebody who is a hero in spite of her femininity is really important. She's a very strong character and her being a woman is part of that strength."
Captain Marvel is set to arrive in theaters on March 8, 2019.
