'X-Men: Apocalypse' tops the North American box office in opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, May 29 (UPI) -- X-Men: Apocalypse is the No. 1 movie in North America, earning $65 million in receipts during its first weekend in theaters, BoxOfficeMojo announced Sunday.

The movie is the third in a trilogy of X-Men prequels starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence.

Coming in at No. 2 is Alice Through the Looking Glass with $28.1 million, followed by The Angry Birds Movie at No. 3 with $18.7 million, Captain America: Civil War at No. 4 with $15.1 million and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising at No. 5 with $9.1 million.

Rounding out the top tier are The Jungle Book at No. 6 with $7 million, The Nice Guys at No. 7 with $6.4 million, Money Monster at No. 8 with $4.3 million, Love & Friendship at No. 9 with $2.5 million and Zootopia at No. 10 with $831,000.
