San Andreas is directed by Brad Peyton, who previously collaborated with Johnson on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012). The film intends "to show what the largest earthquake ever recorded would look like, all in a highly populated area."

Johnson last appeared as the title character in Brett Ratner film Hercules. He will reprise Luke Hobbs in Furious 7, and is also scheduled to star as the antihero Black Adam in DC Comics movie Shazam!.
