'Gone Girl' tops North American box office with $38 million

The psychological thriller starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike is based on Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Gone Girl, a psychological thriller starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, topped the weekend box office in North America with $38 million in receipts, Rentrak announced.

Coming in at No. 2 is Annabelle with $37.2 million, followed by The Equalizer at No. 3 with $32 million, The Boxtrolls at No. 4 with $12.4 million and The Maze Runner at No. 5 with $12 million.

Rounding out the top tier are Left Behind at No. 6 with $6.8 million, This is Where I Leave You at No. 7 with $4 million, Dolphin Tale 2 at No. 8 with $3.5 million, Guardians of the Galaxy at No. 9 with $3 million and No Good Deed at No. 10 with $2.5 million.
