Zach Braff talks 'corporate tweaks' on films at 'Wish I Was Here' premiere

LOS ANGELES, June 25 (UPI) -- Zach Braff said he would have not made his latest flick Whish I was Here without the help of his Kickstarter backers, at the L.A. premiere of the film on Monday.

"This ain't my first rodeo," Braff said at the event's red carpet. "I've been to test screenings for movies and I've seen how corporations tweak these movies, based on those test scores, against the director's will. That wasn't going to happen with this movie."

The former Scurbs actor explained at the event that the film had been a labor of love and discussed how powerful it had been to have the movie's stars connect to fans one-on-one when they attended Comic-Con.

"To see a grip explaining something to a fan, or Kate Hudson talking to them about her wireless microphone. For those of us who spend our lives on set," he said, "it was so fun sharing that with people who love movies."

Braff, 39, co-wrote, directed and starred in the comedic drama about a man who struggles as he re-examines his life, his career, and his family. In his attempt to safeguard the film from corporate Hollywood and have complete editorial control, the actor began a Kickstarter campaign to fund the movie in April 2013.

The actor's campaign met its fundraising goal of $2 million just days after launching the project as a follow up to his 2004 film, Garden State.

Also starring Hudson, Jim Parsons, Joey King and Ashley Green, Wish I Was Here opens wide on July 18.
