'12 Years a Slave' wins top British Academy Film Awards

LONDON, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- "12 Years a Slave" won the Best Picture title and its star Chiwetel Ejiofor the Best Actor statuette at the British Academy of Film Awards ceremony in London.

"Gravity" was another big winner at Sunday night's event, earning the prizes for Best British Film, Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron and Best Cinematography.

"American Hustle" won the awards for Best Original Screenplay, which was written by director David O. Russell, and for Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence.

Barkhad Abdi scored the Best Supporting Actor accolade for "Captain Phillips."

"Blue Jasmine" star Cate Blanchett dedicated her Best Actress honor to her friend and "The Talented Mr. Ripley" co-star Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died this month of a suspected heroin overdose. He was 46.

Steve Coogan won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his "Philomena" script.

Stephen Fry served as host of the ceremony.
