NEW YORK, May 31 (UPI) -- U.S. actor Philip Seymour Hoffman told TMZ he recently spent 10 days in an East Coast rehab facility after abusing prescription drugs and snorting heroin.

Hoffman, 45, had a substance-abuse problem when he was younger but had been clean for about 23 years when he started using drugs again more than a year ago, the TMZ report said.

The Oscar-winning "Capote" star told TMZ he was mainly abusing prescription pills, but recently snorted heroin for about a week, as well.

Realizing he needed help, he checked himself into a detox facility on the East Coast where he was treated for 10 days. He left last Friday and is back to work, the celebrity news website said.
