LOS ANGELES, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A big-screen adaptation of Stephen King's epic novel "The Stand" is in the works, The Hollywood Reporter said.

ABC aired a 6-hour miniseries based on the book starring Rob Lowe, Gary Sinise, Laura San Giacomo, Ruby Dee and Molly Ringwald in 1994. The story follows people who survive a virus that kills most of the population of the United States, and line up on opposing sides in a battle between good and evil.

The Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday Warner Bros. and CBS Films plan to sit down soon with writers to discuss what angle to approach the new version of the tale.

Also to be determined is whether the story will be told in one film or multiple movies, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.
