BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The period drama "The King's Speech" was nominated for 12 Oscars, including the top prize of Best Picture, in Beverly Hills, Calif., Tuesday morning.
The story of how Britain's King George VI overcame his career-crippling stammer in the lead-up to World War II will compete for Hollywood's highest honor against "Black Swan," "127 Hours," "The Fighter," "Inception," "The Kids Are All Right," "The Social Network," "Toy Story 3," "True Grit" and "Winter's Bone."
The nominees for the Best Actor Oscar are Javier Bardem for "Biutiful," Jeff Bridges for "True Grit," Jesse Eisenberg for "The Social Network," Colin Firth for "The King's Speech" and James Franco for "127 Hours."
Shortlisted for the Best Actress prize are Annette Bening for "The Kids Are All Right," Nicole Kidman for "Rabbit Hole," Jennifer Lawrence for "Winter's Bone," Natalie Portman for "Black Swan" and Michelle Williams for "Blue Valentine."
Vying for the Best Supporting Actor accolade are Christian Bale for "The Fighter," John Hawkes for "Winter's Bone," Mark Ruffalo for "The Kids Are All Right," Geoffrey Rush for "The King's Speech" and Jeremy Renner for "The Town."
The contenders in the Best Supporting Actress category are Amy Adams and Melissa Leo for "The Fighter," Helena Bonham-Carter for "The King's Speech," Hailee Steinfeld for "True Grit" and Jacki Weaver for "Animal Kingdom."
Nominated for Best Director are Darren Aronofsky for "Black Swan," David O. Russell for "The Fighter," Tom Hooper for "The King's Speech," David Fincher for "The Social Network," and Joel and Ethan Coen for "True Grit."
"How to Train Your Dragon," "The Illusionist" and "Toy Story 3" were nominated for Best Animated Picture.
The nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay are "127 Hours" by Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy, "The Social Network" by Aaron Sorkin, "Toy Story 3" by Michael Arndt, with story by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich, "True Grit" by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen and "Winter's Bone" by Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini.
Mentioned for the Best Original Screenplay are "Another Year" by Mike Leigh, "The Fighter" by Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson, with story by Keith Dorrington, Tamasy and Johnson, "Inception" by Christopher Nolan, "The Kids Are All Right" by Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg and "The King's Speech" by David Seidler.
"The King's Speech" also earned nods for film editing, music, sound mixing, art direction, costume design and cinematography.
True Grit" earned 10 Oscar nominations while "The Social Network" and "Inception" each picked up eight.
The winners are to be announced at a ceremony Feb. 27.
