LOS ANGELES, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Summit Entertainment and Participant Media say they have set a U.S. release date for the Mel Gibson-Jodie Foster collaboration "The Beaver."

Gibson and Foster previously worked together on "Maverick."

Their latest movie "The Beaver," which is about a depressed man who communicates through a hand puppet, is to hit select theaters March 23 before rolling out nationwide April 8, The Hollywood Reporter said Thursday.

Foster directed the picture and co-stars in it with Gibson, Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence.

Gibson's career has been overshadowed in recent months by his split from the mother of his baby daughter, who has accused him of assaulting her during a heated argument.

Audio allegedly featuring Gibson threatening the woman and uttering racial and ethnic slurs has been released on the Internet, damaging the actor-director's reputation. He has not been charged with any crime in connection with the alleged incident and Foster has said she will stand by him because he is a longtime friend.
