LOS ANGELES, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Film director Ivan Reitman has confirmed he will direct a third movie in Hollywood's "Ghostbusters" franchise.

Reitman directed 1984's "Ghostbusters" and 1989's "Ghostbusters II." Both supernatural comedies starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver.

The Hollywood Reporter said Reitman has been working as a producer with Sony's Columbia Pictures in developing a script by Lee Eisneberg and Gene Stupnitsky for a third "Ghostbusters" flick.

Reitman recently confirmed he will direct the project, as well, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.

"I hope to start shooting it this next year," Reitman told MTV last week.

The report did not say whether the stars from the first two installments are expected to return for the third adventure.
