LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- "The Proposal" won the People's Choice Award for favorite comedy movie at a ceremony in Los Angeles Wednesday night.

"Incredible. We were going to express our gratitude through the exciting medium of dance, but they didn't play any music as soon as we got up here," joked the film's star, Ryan Reynolds, who stood beside his leading lady Sandra Bullock as they collected their statuette. "The people have chosen and we are very grateful they have chosen our film, especially in that category. There were some funny movies there."

"Great competition and we're a little surprised," Bullock said, referring to the other nominees -- "He's Just Not That Into You," "Bride Wars," "17 Again" and "The Hangover."

Bullock returned to the stage later in the evening to pick up the prize for favorite movie actress.

Hugh Jackman earned the award for favorite action star.

"Between being foreign-born, an action star and a People's Choice (Award winner,) there's only one thing left for me to do and that's run for governor of California," Jackman joked, referring to screen-icon-turned-politician, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Johnny Depp won the favorite movie actor prize, as well as the actor of the decade honor for having received more votes than any other male movie star in the last 10 years.

"Bless you so much," Depp told the audience, which then gave him a standing ovation. "I'm deeply humbled by this great honor, which comes from you, the people, which means everything to me, certainly. It means everything to us all because the only reason any of us are up here is because of you, so thank you for that. It has been an amazing decade."

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" won the award for favorite movie, while "The Twilight Saga" was named favorite franchise and "Inglourious Basterds" declared the favorite independent film.
