Abby Wambach engaged to author Glennon Doyle Melton

Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Abby Wambach is headed to the altar with Christian author Glennon Doyle Melton.

The 36-year-old retired soccer star recently got engaged to the 40-year-old writer after a few months of dating.

"Abby and I decided to hold hands forever. First, fiercely, and forever @abbywambach," Melton wrote wrote Saturday on Instagram.

"Happy. #iseethemoonnow," Wamback added on her own account the next day.

Wambach and Melton confirmed their relationship in November after splitting from their respective spouses, Sarah Huffman and Craig Melton, in 2016. Melton and her ex-husband share son Chase and daughters Tish and Amma.

"Feels like the world could use all the love it can get right now. So today, I'm going to share with you my new love," the author wrote Nov. 13 on Facebook. "Her name is Abby."

"Abby is deeply sensitive and kind," she said. "Abby's brave. Not just with her words but with her entire being. She has never been afraid to be herself, even when the world told her not to be. I learn from her everyday about the woman I want to become."

Wambach retired from soccer in 2015 after three appearances at the Summer Olympics and four at the FIFA Women's World Cup. Melton is known for the books Carry On, Warrior and Love Warrior, and for founding the blog and online community Momastery.
