NEW YORK, May 6 (UPI) -- Lucy Liu is opening up about her son, Rockwell, and her journey to motherhood.

The 47-year-old actress discussed the 8-month-old infant and her choice to use a surrogate while promoting the Tylenol How We Family campaign. Liu welcomed Rockwell via gestational carrier in August.

"I think the biggest change is this permanence that I have with him, this commitment," the star told Extra. "It's a very different feeling, just knowing I have somebody there that I will take care of and have responsibility for. It's exciting."

"He's doing great, he's crawling, he's just incredibly special, he's a very happy baby," she shared. "He brings me great joy. You know, it's funny, because I used to go to work and come home and just go about my business, but now I have something to look forward to."

Liu explained she pursued parenthood "a little bit later on" because she was "focused on [her] career." She faced backlash after Rockwell's birth for using a surrogate, and told Yahoo! Celebrity the negative response on social media was surprising.

"I think it's really important that people also embrace that it's not about those details, it's about how you carry on from the point of having your child and loving your family," the actress said in response.

"I find that really shocking," she added of the criticism. "I felt it was strange and odd in this day and age that people would have a negative slant on someone having a family, or having judgment on how someone had a family."

Liu recently told the Today show she hopes the Kung Fu Panda movies will be her "legacy" for her son. The actress plays Dr. Joan Watson on CBS series Elementary, which will air its Season 4 finale Sunday.
