LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- After seven seasons of detective work mishaps, TNT's long running drama "Rizzoli & Isles" will come to a close.

"It felt like it was time," said Turner Entertainment chief creative officer Kevin Reilly Thursday when he confirmed the show's cancellation at the Television Critics Association press tour.

According to E! Online, the final season will air with 13 episodes this summer.

When asked if the cancellation came by the show's actresses. Reilly indicated that "Rizzoli & Isles" stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander would probably do more episodes.

"I think both ladies have had a really satisfying experience and sort of indicated that they—I don't know if they wouldn't do anymore, but they felt very comfortable, the producers felt that way, it's had a good run," Reilly said. "We all kind of discussed it and everyone said yeah, let's finish out 13 great ones and call it a day. We felt good about that."

The crime procedural, Harmon stars as police detective Jane Rizzoli and Alexander plays medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles.

Although it maintained a status as one of the top cable programs since it premiered in 2010, the show faded after its first two seasons, reported Variety magazine.

"'Rizzoli & Isles' hit a cord with audiences the moment it aired, which is unusual and special," Alexander told the magazine. "And it has remained so for almost seven seasons thanks to the passionate commitment of our amazing fans. In this world, that's a huge success. I believe we have two eyes so one can look back to the past as the other turns its gaze to the future. As 'R&I' comes to a close, I am deeply grateful and inspired by the work we have done and the friendships we have forged but also am excited to see what the future will hold."

"Rizzoli & Isles" will resume its sixth season on February 16 with the seventh season airing in the summer.
