Will Ferrell rethinks Santa Claus on 'Tonight Show'

By Marilyn Malara

NEW YORK, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Will Ferrell appeared on Wednesday night's episode of the Tonight Show not as himself but as the "new Santa Claus."

Ferrell embodied a bleach-blonde surfer-dude persona decked-out in a sleeveless red shirt with classic white trim, a camouflage sack and trusty t-shirt gun to announce himself as the new, improved Kris Kringle.

"Look brah, the Kris Kringle we all grew up with is old and lame," he joked. "Dude looks like someone's weird grandpa. Kids today are demanding a newer, hipper, more badass Santa Claus, so uh, you're welcome."

Because using flying reindeer and shimmying down chimney's was not his "style," Ferrell announced gifts this year would be delivered via drone, as long as you're in the "drone zone."

"This is 2013, get with the prog!" he said to host Jimmy Fallon. "It's the year of the drone."

After Ferrell mentioned "this new band I'm into right now, it's called Smash Mouth," he walked into the audience to flip the script when it came to asking people what they want for Christmas.

"Since I'm the new Santa, you don't sit on my lap, I sit on your lap," he said.
