LOS ANGELES, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Elizabeth Olsen's ex-fiance, model and actor Boyd Holbrook, says he received notice of the split the same day his best friend died.

In an interview with Man of the World magazine, Us Weekly reports Holbrook said the abrupt ending to his three-year relationship with the Avengers: Age of Ultron actress felt like "divorce."

"On the same day that my best friend died, I got a call from my girl to tell me it was over," he said, not mentioning Olsen's name. His best friend was 60-year-old photographer David Armstrong, whom Holbrook said was the first person to encourage him.

"He told me to do everything I wanted to do. No one had ever told me that before," he said. "He was a very important figure in my life."

Reports Olsen ended the engagement spurred in January after she was spotted without her engagement ring in California. The pair were together since 2012 and were engaged in May 2014.

Recently, the sister of twins Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen was quoted expressing sincere chemistry with I Saw The Light costar Tom Hiddleston. "Tom and I have been wanting to work with each other for a while," she told MTV News in September.

"We've known each other for about four years, and we met doing a chemistry read for an audition and we were like, 'Oh my God, this would be so much fun if we worked with each other," she added.

During the interview, she asserted she was not dating Hiddleston, but "people can think what they want to think."
