LOS ANGELES, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Lindsay Lohan shocked fans by channeling late actress Sharon Tate.

The 29-year-old actress shared a photo of herself in an outfit inspired by Tate on Instagram, writing, "#cancer meets #AQUARIUS I LOVE SHARON TATE #themeLOOK #hippieWINTERCHIC."

Tate and four others were killed at her home on Charles Manson's orders in August 1969. The convicted murderer celebrated his 81st birthday the same day as Lohan's post, causing many to berate the Mean Girls star for her "disrespect" and "insensitivity."

Manson was initially sentenced to death in 1971, but California's temporary abolition of the death sentence the next year commuted his sentence to life imprisonment. The cult leader made headlines last year after he became engaged to a 26-year-old woman.

Tate was 26 and pregnant by husband Roman Polanski at the time of her death. She is best known for starring in Valley of the Dolls and also appeared in Eye of the Devil and Polanski's 1967 movie The Fearless Vampire Killers.

Lohan, who struggled with substance abuse and legal issues in recent years, said she was looking forward to a "fresh start" when her probation ended in May. She last starred in The Canyons with James Deen in 2013 and guest starred on CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls in 2014.
