Macaulay Culkin falls victim to death hoax

A post claiming that the 33-year-old actor had died began to circulate on Facebook Sunday.

NEW YORK, April 22 (UPI) -- Macaulay Culkin fell victim to a death hoax over the weekend.

A post that claimed the 33-year-old actor had died began to circulate on Facebook Sunday. The statement asked fans to show their "sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page," and the post received an outpouring of condolences and over one million likes.

"At about 11 a.m. ET on Sunday (April 20, 2014), our beloved actor Macaulay Culkin passed away. Macaulay Culkin was born on August 26, 1980 in New York. He will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page."

The rumor became so widespread that a representative for Culkin issued a statement Monday to confirm that the actor is alive and well. Culkin is currently involved with his band, Pizza Underground, and performed in Boston on Saturday.
