SACRAMENTO, April 14 (UPI) -- The Deftones have debuted previously unreleased song "Smile" in honor of late bassist Chi Cheng.

Cheng was the Deftones' original bassist, and had been with the band since 1988. In November 2008, the musician was involved in a serious car accident that left him in a comatose state. He made progress toward recovery, but ultimately died of cardiac arrest on April 13, 2013.

"Smile" is one of the last songs that Cheng recorded with the band, and is from the unreleased album Eros. The band intended to release the album in 2008, but shelved the project after Cheng's accident. The Deftones debuted the song on Sunday to recognize the one-year anniversary of the bassist's death and honor his memory.

The band plans to release Eros on an unspecified date in the future.
