Union cites conditions in Disney suicides

PARIS, April 4 (UPI) -- A union leader at Disneyland Paris blames recent staff suicides on working conditions but management claims the union is exploiting the tragedies.

Three Disneyland workers have killed themselves in 2010 and two of the deaths lie at the doorstep of the company's "brutal" working conditions, union spokesman Guy-Bruno Mboe told The Sunday Times of London.

"It's all about profit, profit, profit," he said. "The combination of fewer staff and demands for more productivity just pushed this poor man over the edge."

The Times said Disneyland Paris has denied any connection to the March 26 death of a father of four, who hanged himself the same day he was to return to work as a restaurant manager after being on sick leave.

Five weeks earlier, another Disneyland restaurant employee threw himself in front of a train and a third employee killed himself in February, The Times said.

Disney accused the union of exploiting the suicides, but said it would look into "possible factors of stress or harassment," The Times reported.
