BOSTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A Boston University student says he is disappointed he has been ordered to pay $675,000 for illegally downloading and sharing 30 copyright songs.
The Boston Globe reported Saturday a U.S. District Court jury in Boston found graduate student Joel Tenenbaum did infringe on the copyrights of four record labels by illegally downloading and sharing songs on peer-to-peer networks.
"I'm disappointed but not surprised," Tenenbaum said. "But I am thankful that it wasn't much bigger, that it wasn't millions."
U.S. District Judge Nancy Gertner asked the jury Thursday to determine how much in damages Tenenbaum, 25, should pay since he already conceded liability regarding the illegal downloads.
The Globe said while the jury could have awarded the labels up to $150,00 a song, Tenenbaum instead was ordered to pay $22,500 for each infringement.
Harvard law Professor Charles Nesson, who represented Tenenbaum in the case, said he would appeal the decision.
