NEW YORK, June 16 (UPI) -- The author of "60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye" says his book is a parody of -- not a sequel to -- the classic U.S. novel "The Catcher in the Rye."
J.D. Salinger, the reclusive U.S. writer who composed the original book, is suing Fredrik Colting, who wrote his novel under the pen name J.D. California, for copyright infringement.
In court papers filed in a New York federal court, Salinger requested publication of Colting's book be blocked.
However, the New York Post said Colting is fighting Salinger's lawsuit and arguing that his book is a "protected parody" under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Colting and his publisher described "60 Years Later" as "a transformative commentary and criticism, a fair use of minimal elements from 'Catcher'" in their court filing, the Post said.
