T.I. begins prison sentence

FORREST CITY, Ark., May 26 (UPI) -- T.I.'s lawyer says the Atlanta rapper has checked into the federal prison in Forrest City, Ark., to begin his yearlong sentence for a weapons conviction.

The hip-hop artist, who was sentenced to a year and a day in jail for trying to buy machine guns and silencers from undercover federal agents in 2007, played his final pre-prison concert this past weekend.

"I'm doing the best I can to get out there, man, and put something positive on these young kids, man," CNN quoted T.I. as saying during Sunday's show. "I try my best. I need y'all help, though."

T.I.'s lawyer told TMZ the 28-year-old rapper reported to the minimum security prison before Tuesday's noon deadline to begin his sentence.

The hip-hop artist spent Monday with close family and friends at his home in Georgia, sources told the entertainment Web site.
