LOS ANGELES, March 9 (UPI) -- U.S. singer Ashlee Simpson-Wentz has been cast in an upcoming remake of the television series "Melrose Place," The Hollywood Reporter said.

Simpson-Wentz, who recently gave birth to her first child, has previously acted on the TV drama "7th Heaven." She and her husband, rocker Pete Wentz, are also to appear on the March 18 episode of "CSI: New York."

The Hollywood Reporter said Simpson-Wentz will play a "bright-eyed but shrewd small-town girl" in "Melrose," the CW's updated version of the popular 1990s nighttime soap.

Michael Rady and Katie Cassidy were previously cast in "Melrose."
