LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has bought the rights to F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age novel "The Great Gatsby," Variety.com reported.

Luhrmann's films include "Moulin Rouge," "William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet," "Strictly Ballroom" and the current release, "Australia."

The entertainment industry trade newspaper said Luhrmann plans to concentrate on making a "Gatsby" adaptation after he finishes campaigning on behalf of "Australia" this awards season.

A screenplay for the latest incarnation of the popular book has not been penned yet and no studio is attached to the project, Variety.com said.
