'High School Musical 3' opens at No. 1

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Classes were back in session this weekend with "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" scoring an "A" among U.S. movie-goers, Box Office Mojo said Sunday.

The Kenny Ortega-directed romantic comedy piled up an estimated $42 million in U.S. theater box office receipts to grab the No. 1 ranking.

Opening at No. 2 was the horror flick "Saw V," directed by David Hackl, which raked in $30.5 million.

The two new movies pushed last weekend's top two films, "Max Payne" and "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," down to Nos. 3 and 4 with $7.6 million and "$6.92 million, respectively.

Another new offering, "Pride & Glory," a police family saga starring Colin Farrell, Edward Norton and Jon Voight, opened at No. 5 with $6.33 million in estimated gate receipts.

Rounding out the Top 10 were "W.," $5.33 million; "Eagle Eye," $5.14 million; "Body of Lies," $4.07 million; and "Quarantine," $2.55 million.

Knocked out of the top tier were "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," "Sex Drive" and "Nights in Rodanthe."
