Breathed to end 'Opus' comic strip

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. cartoonist Berkeley Breathed has announced plans to end his Sunday-only comic strip "Opus" next month.

Breathed finished his "Bloom County" strip when Republican President Ronald Reagan left office in the 1980s and the Washington Post said he plans to wrap up "Opus" to coincide with Republican President George W. Bush's departure from the White House.

Breathed's last "Opus" strip is slated to run Nov. 2.

"With the crisis in Wall Street and Washington, I'm suspending my comic strip to assist the nation," Breathed said through his syndicate, The Washington Post Writers Group. "The best way I can help is to leave politics permanently. ... I call on John McCain to join me."

The Post said the left-leaning cartoonist hinted he might be retiring his current endeavor in an interview with Texas Monthly last year.

"I'd like to see Opus go out with George Bush, both headed into the sunset," Breathed said.
