Jim Henson's son picking up TV reins

NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Brian Henson, son of the late "Sesame Street" creator Jim Henson, says his new U.S. TV series, "Sid the Science Kid," should appeal to children.

The 45-year-old son of the famed puppeteer said while series executives were challenged to test the show with actual children, they used their own parenting experiences to create it, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.

"It's hard to test ideas, so we try to please ourselves. Most of us have kids, so that helps. You just have to go with your gut instinct," he told the newspaper.

The PBS Kids series, which premieres Monday, follows the attempts of its animated title character to answer life questions such as how birds fly.

Henson said by using animatronics in the series, he hopes to build off his father's famed puppetry efforts.

He said series creators included motion-capture technology in "Sid," creating a "comedy-friendly" format he thinks should be a success.

"This is the first big series and it's really monumental," he told the Daily News. "I think we'll do a lot more production this way because it's very comedy-friendly."
