Stolen Shakespeare folio recovered

LONDON, July 11 (UPI) -- A rare First Folio edition of the complete works of William Shakespeare, stolen a decade ago, has turned up at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington.

The Daily Telegraph said a 51-year-old suspect, claiming to be an international businessman, was arrested after he brought the 17th century volume to the library and asked the staff to authenticate it.

He left the book with librarians -- who determined it was stolen from the Durham University Library in December 1998, along with numerous other manuscripts -- and then notified authorities.

Of the 1,000 First Folio editions of the anthology printed in 1623, only 228 are believed to still exist.

More than a third of them are in the Folger Shakespeare Library, where the suspect allegedly dropped off his copy, the Telegraph said.

The volume is estimated to have a market value of at least $30 million should it ever be sold, the newspaper said.
