'Sex and the City' opens at No. 1

LOS ANGELES, June 1 (UPI) -- The TV program-inspired movie "Sex and the City" has knocked the latest "Indiana Jones" installment out of the top spot in U.S. theaters, gate figures show.

Box Office Mojo reported Sunday that estimated opening weekend ticket sales totaled $55.74 million for Sarah Jessica Parker and her fellow "Sex" stars. Harrison Ford's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" pulled in $46 million for a two-week total of $219 million.

Another new movie, "The Strangers," a Bryan Bertino crime thriller, debuted at No. 3 with $20.71 million, while "Iron Man" was No. 4 at $14 million and "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" was No. 5 with $13.02 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were "What Happens in Vegas" at $6.85 million, "Baby Mama" at $2.22 million, "Speed Racer" at $2.14 million, "Made of Honor" at $2 million and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall at $1.04 million.

"Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay and "The Visitor" dropped out of the top tier this week.
