Daredevil performs high-wire act in N.Y.

NEW YORK, May 4 (UPI) -- High-wire artist Phillipe Petit walked across a tightrope in New York's Washington Square Park to show his love of magic, the daredevil said.

Petit, who once used a tightrope to walk between the two World Trade Center buildings, used an hour-long performance this weekend to share his passion with the public, the New York Post said Sunday.

"I started doing magic by myself at 6 years old. I was on the street juggling by 15. I created a character that traveled about the word and I will never stop. It is who I am," Petit said.

Yet Saturday's performance 5 feet off the ground paled in comparison to his famed 1974 stunt involving the Twin Towers.

That performance not only earned Petit international fame, but caused him to be arrested and undergo a psychiatric evaluation, the Post said.

The historical daredevil act is the subject of the new documentary "Man On Wire," which Petit was reportedly promoting with his most recent performance.
